A Glimpse into Q4: ADOPT

Technological innovations, further decentralization and documentation.

Last week, we broke down Q3 and many of the milestones that we accomplished during this period. If you missed it, you can check it out here.

Q4 - A Brief Introduction.

Q4 will probably be the most development intensive quarter Bitgrin has gone through thus far. The core dev team will tackle technological challenges that have yet be resolved in the mimblewimble ecosystem; these include non-interactive transactions and secure IP-based transactions with NAT hole-punching. Both of these technical developments will make transacting in Bitgrin a seamless and effortless experience putting us one step closer to widespread adoption.

We are also pushing forward in the community development and growth aspect with the introduction of new exchanges and pools for Bitgrin, documentation for miners, developers and the like, a technical whitepaper and much more.

Q4 ADOPT, is all about introducing developments to make Bitgrin more adoption-friendly, growing the community and providing people the necessary tools to learn, mine and develop on Bitgrin. I hope you enjoy this writeup and are looking forward to the coming Quarter as much as I am.

See you on the other side, enjoy!

Another take on non-interactive transactions

Bitgrin has no addresses; this is due to the fact that transactions are created by computing a shared secret. Both the sender and receiver agree on a blinding factor for the transaction or in more simple terms, both parties exchange data with each other, and create the transaction.

This type of transaction is "interactive” as both parties have to interact with each other to create the transaction. Once the transaction is created, it is broadcasted to the network.

Having no addresses can be seen as an advantage as there is nothing to link you to you counter-party, ensuring the maximum degree of privacy and anonymity.

Although, it can also be a major disadvantage. Most cryptocurrency participants are accustomed to non-interactive transactions and sending their coins to an address. Therefore, there is an additional layer of friction and difficulty to transacting on Bitgrin in comparison to other blockchains.

Current Methods for Transfer

HTTPS

HTTPS transfer is the quickest way to transact Bitgrin. The sender specifies the IP address he wants to send the coins to, the receiver turns on his HTTP listener and receives the coins.

A major disadvantage with this method of transfer is that both parties have to be online during the time of the transaction. Imagine having to have your email open 24/7 in order to be able to receive emails, it would be chaos. HTTP transfers work for now, they are still cumbersome as participants have to open their ports on their router, something that requires a certain degree of technical savviness.

The Bitgrin community has worked to improve HTTPS transfers in two ways.

  • BitgrinPay - Allows users to transact with exchanges & pools without having to open their port

  • Nat-Transfer - Allows users to transact with each other without having to open their port. This is a development that is coming this Quarter.

These two solutions solve the port-forwarding issue but users still have to be online to transact with each other. This is where file-transfer comes in.

File-transfer

The file transfer method is a multi-step process that allows participants to move transaction forward while the other party is offline.

The sender creates a transaction file that he/she sends through email, messaging, etc. to the recipient. The recipient acknowledges the file through their wallet(Kingfish), and sends it back to sender. The sender finalizes the file and broadcasts transaction to network.

This method of transfer requires little to no technical prowess and prevents users from sending coins to the wrong address mistakingly. However, this process adds significant friction to transacting Bitgrin as it is a multi-step process and requires a 3rd party to transfer the files.

Bitgrin Introduces Non-Interactive Transactions

Non-interactive transactions will be introduced for the first time ever to a mimblewimble coin this Quarter. Lead dev, Pharazen, has been developing this solution for several months now.

As for details or the progress on this development, there isn’t much information out there aside from what has been made public already.

Maybe the community could conduct a Q&A with the core dev team to get a better grasp on the progress of this development.

This is a groundbreaking development for the space and will change the way people transact.

Documentation for miners, developers and users of Bitgrin.

Documentation is a fundamental pillar for open-source projects. Without the proper documentation it becomes difficult for developers to contribute to the project, cumbersome for miners to get started and contribute hashpower to the network and confusing for the user as the educational resources are limited.

The need for documentation is especially apparent for pioneering projects such as Bitgrin where the technology is sophisticated and there is an overall lack of resources.

This quarter, several community members have tasked themselves with improving the available documentation for the Bitgrin community. In this section, we will go over several initiatives that have been set in motion to improve the documentation and education in the Bitgrin ecosystem.

Odin, FAQ, website, and more.

Odin, has been working on a comprehensive FAQ for the past month or two. This FAQ covers mining tutorials, wallet user guides, Bitgrin education, and a host of other resources. The FAQ will be hosted under docs.bitgrin.dev.

The documentation will be especially helpful for new developers joining the Bitgrin Ecosystem as this resource will help them get set up.

Odin has also been working on a community website for Bitgrin, similar to getbitgrin.com. More on this later as he reveals the progress on these initiatives!

Bitgrin.dev Redesign

As announced recently, Pharazen and Smaug are working on a complete revamp for bitgrin.dev.

The website will include an improved UI, new documentation(being developed by Odin), a mining calculator and much more.

Below is a screenshot that illustrates the mining calculator that will be present in the future website.

A New Block Explorer for Bitgrin.dev

This new block explorer goes back to the redesign that was shared several months ago here. Smaug is currently working on the new iteration that includes includes many of the features listed on the block explorer specifications page on Github.

Bitgrin Base

Bitgrin Base is an independant organization with the mission of expanding the Bitgrin ecosystem by increasing the awareness and education of Bitgrin among other cryptocurrency holders, privacy enthusiasts and the world.

This Quarter, Bitgrin Base will be launching a Youtube channel to further Bitgrin education, create biweekly educational content for Bitgrin on Medium, distribute airdrops, create a Bitgrin merch shop and maybe even host an NYC meetup.

Origination of transactions with NAT hole-punching.

“Hole punching (or sometimes punch-through) is a technique in computer networking for establishing a direct connection between two parties in which one or both are behind firewalls or behind routers that use network address translation (NAT).”

Currently, as explained in the “Current Methods for Transfer - HTTPS” section, every user transacting on Bitgrin through HTTPS has to open their port. This process is cumbersome and requires a certain degree of technical skill.

Although the Bitgrin core devs have come up with a solution to transact through HTTPS with pools and exchanges(BitgrinPay), it is still impractical for user-to-user transactions.

The development of secure IP-based transactions added with NAT hole-punching will allow people to transact between each other without having to open their ports. Bitgrin will be the first mimblewimble-based coin to implement this innovative solution and will make transacting much more seamless.

This is a development other projects can adopt into their blockchains thus improving the mimblewimble ecosystem as a whole!

Trade Bitgrin on More Exchanges.

Third Exchange around the corner.

This listing will be happening before the end of this month.

Adding a 3rd exchange will increase:

  1. transparency

  2. exposure

  3. decentralized liquidity

Transparency Platforms

With the 3rd exchange, Bitgrin will be able to apply to all the platforms listed in the picture below. Being listed in all these platforms will not only increase the exposure of Bitgrin among the crypto community significantly, but it will also increase the transparency as information will be more readily-available for everyone(investors, speculators, miners, etc).

Additional mining pools.

Currently, there is one pool that supports Bitgrin mining. BladeDoyle has been a great pool administer; he has constantly answered questions and helped new miners get setup. Props to BladeDoyle!

Lead dev, Pharazen, recently announced that there is a new pool listing coming soon. This is exciting as hashrate will likely increase and become more distributed, making the Bitgrin network stronger.

This Quarter, we aim to be listed in at least 3 different pools. This is a community effort and can be led by anyone who wants to contribute. I will personally be reaching out to various pools, so if you’d like to collaborate hit me up!

Whitepaper to be released.

“Its in stage 2, meaning drawing a rough draft... then making visual aids, then rewriting, and then making a website to present it since none reads PDFs. And i think it’s more of a marketing material than anything.” - Smaug

Not much information is yet available on the whitepaper being released. We do know that Smaug is currently working on it and it is in “stage 2”. Will we see the whitepaper come out this quarter? That is yet to be known but we do know it is on the way.

More To Come

This is not everything that is to come for this quarter. These are just some of the highlights we could gather and expect going into Q4.

The Bitgrin Ecosystem is growing and with the new exchanges, pools, documentation and technological innovations being introduced this quarter, the ecosystem will grow even further.

Upwards and onwards!

The Bitgrin Quarterly Report(Q3)

BitgrinPay Release, New Exchange Listings, Community Developments and more!

Hello everyone and welcome to the Bitgrin Quarterly Report. It’s been over 8 months since the Bitgrin network went live; we’ve come a long way.

Throughout this Quarter we’ve achieved key milestones from the roadmap and seen a significant amount of contributions from the community. All this progress has not been without any setbacks but time and time again we continue to prove our resilience as a community.

So, how are we breaking this Quarterly report down?

  • We’ll begin by looking at the goals we had originally established for this Q3 and examine the progress on each one.

  • Then, we will discuss all the additional developments that took place and the various initiatives set forth by the community.

  • Finally, we’ll wrap up the report with a conclusion that sums up all the key points.

Without further ado, let’s begin delving into The Bitgrin Q3 Report!

Q3 2019 - Expand Breakdown

Goal #1: Bring more exchanges and liquidity to Bitgrin.

For the past several months, Vinex Network had been the only exchange that supported XBG/BTC trading(aside from unofficial OTC channels). Vinex has been a great exchange for Bitgrin and XBG trading volume has increased significantly since its listing on the exchange.

VINEX was quick to update to v2.0 shortly after the Bitgrin network was upgraded to v2.0. They’ve been extremely responsive overall and have proven to be a reliable supporter of the Bitgrin ecosystem. The exchange provided a safe avenue for XBG trading when the only alternatives were OTC trading which introduce an additional series of risks. The XBG/BTC pair has consistently been either #1 or #2 in trading volume in the exchange which shows strong market interest in Bitgrin.

Bitgrin’s second listing this Quarter was on CITEX Global. For those of you who don’t know, CITEX is a global cryptocurrency exchange catering mainly to the Asian community; the exchange supports KRW, USDT, BTC and ETH pairs. CITEX has a wide selection of coins and listed Bitgrin as part of the P-board launchpad. This launchpad initiative aims to support projects with a high potential for impact & growth in the world and we are proud to be part of this initiative.

In addition to being listed in the P-board, XBG also now has its first XBG/USDT pair; market participants can now trade XBG without having to worry about BTC fluctuations. This is the first of many XBG/Fiat-type pairs we hope to support in the future on our way to becoming private digital money for everyone. We aim to support more fiat pairs such as KRW, CNY, EUR and eventually a fiat onramp to make trading XBG as accessible and easy for everyone, everywhere.

CITEX caters mainly to the Asian community which provides an additional avenue for liquidity to current community members in this demographic and exposes new market participants from Asia to Bitgrin as well! Our Asian community has been growing these past several months proving a strong support base to the Bitgrin ecosystem.

There is still a third exchange listing around the corner which will not only integrate BitgrinPay to allow seamless deposits and withdrawals for users but will allow XBG to get listed on platforms such as CoinMarketCap, Binance V-Label, Blockfolio Signal, Delta Direct and Whattomine.

These integrations will not only increase the exposure of Bitgrin to other miners, developers and market participants but also help increase the transparency to provide information in a more easily digestible format to the Bitgrin community. The community will be able to have the Weekly Bitgrin Digest delivered directly to their phone through the Blockfolio app for example.

Our commitment to bring on more exchanges that support XBG trading and provide more liquidity/accessibility continues to be a top priority as we aim to become a truly decentralized and censorship-resistant cryptocurrency.

Goal #2: Mobile and Light Wallets are released.

The mobile and light wallets were not delivered this quarter. As many of you probably know, the Kingfish GUI wallet went through several iterations this Quarter as the devs debugged with the community and upgraded the Bitgrin network to v2.0. The core developers have made it clear their priority towards strengthening the core layer of Bitgrin making it more secure and robust instead of building supplementary software.

If anyone wants to take up the challenge in building a mobile or web wallet for Bitgrin, the community is always open for these sorts of contributions as we all grow the Bitgrin ecosystem together. You can message Pharazen or Smaug in DM if you ever have any questions or make a surprise contribution as cmxw0 did with BitgrinX!

Goal #3: BitgrinPay goes live.

BitgrinPay has been implemented on the pool run by BladeDoyle allowing miners to receive their XBG payments without having to forward their ports. The next step is to have exchanges implement BitgrinPay so users can withdraw their XBG seamlessly. The 3rd exchange where Bitgrin is being listed will implement BitgrinPay on launch; Vinex and CITEX have yet to do so.

Q3 2019 - Full Breakdown

Now that we’ve broken down the Q3 milestones from the roadmap, we’ve learned that Bitgrin has been listed in a new exchange, now has a USDT pair, there is a third exchange coming and BitgrinPay has officially gone live. The mobile and light wallets were not delivered but Kingfish GUI has gone through several additional iterations of improvements. We are laying the groundwork and creating a strong foundation for everything that is to come in this quarter and beyond.

Given that Bitgrin is a community project, the roadmap milestones are just a small fraction of all the developments that go on in the Bitgrin ecosystem. Many initiatives are led by community members whether those be in the field of technical developments, documentation, creative outlets or spreading awareness.

In this section, we will delve into all these additional developments that weren’t laid out in the roadmap.

Kingfish

Kingfish is Bitgrin’s main GUI wallet. Despite it being created in Q1, it continued to be improved upon throughout this quarter. We will delve into the specifics in this section.

Hyper Sync Launch

Hyper Sync is an innovation that makes Bitgrin sync up from 0 in less than 1 minute. It was an essential component for Kingfish v2.0 and has made it possible for the creation of a web wallet soon. Kingfish now syncs with the blockchain extremely quickly thanks to this development.

Kingfish GUI goes open-source MIT license

For several months, the community requested that the Kingfish wallet be open-sourced. The core team made it happen and made the software open-source under the MIT license on July 18. Now, other developers can contribute to improving Kingfish or making alternative versions of the software as we will see next.

Developer Ghostinx pushes fixes and more.

Developer and Bitgrin community member, GhostinX, has made several improvements to the Kingfish GUI; you can see those here. GhostinX has also compiled Bitgrin v2.0 for OSX which you can find here. He/she joined the Bitgrin community several months ago in July and it’s been great to see GhostinX contribute to the repo regularly.

Bitgrin Core

Bitgrin updates to v2.0

About one month after Grin forked and the updates were reviewed by lead dev, Pharazen, we decided to fork and implement most of the new changes. Subsequently, Kingfish was updated, and exchanges & pools upgraded to v2.0. We kept the original Bitgrin mining algo, therefore, we don’t share the same algo as Grin anymore.

Bitgrin code is pulled into the Grin repo

You can find the specific commit here. This was pretty cool to see and shows that Grin and Bitgrin can co-exist and even contribute to each other’s success!

Block Explorers

New block explorer draft published

Core team member, Smaug, designed a mockup for a new block explorer to be hosted under explorer.bitgrin.dev. You can find more details on the mockup here.

Bitgrin X by goes live.

Fellow Bitgriner and developer, cmxw0, has created a new block explorer for the Bitgrin Ecosystem. The block explorer is called Bitgrin X. cmxw0 has mentioned he/she will be adding more features to this explorer soon. If you would like to send cmxw0 a suggestion for a specific feature, thank him for the contribution or stay up to date with new BitgrinX developments, you can follow and message cmxw0 on twitter here!

Community

Bitgrin.io is hijacked by disgruntled community member and content is transferred to bitgrin.dev

I won’t get into much detail here as the entire sequence of events was laid out in this post. The bitgrin.io “You just got scammed…” copy has since been taken down and the core devs currently run http://bitgrin.dev. Following the statement of making the new website mirrorless and uncensorable, the core team has posted the code of bitgrin.dev on Github here; in case anyone wants to host it in their own domain.

Gundam-Z creates an FAQ for Bitgrin and becomes a moderator.

Gundam-Z, a community member who has been around since the launch of the project has become a moderator in the Discord and Telegram servers helping newcomers get set up whether they are trying to set up their wallets or mine Bitgrin for the first time. Gundam-Z also created an FAQ page to educate miners, developers and, other new XBG supporters, making the onboarding experience a much more seamless process. The FAQ is very detailed and you can find it here.

Getbitgrin.com goes live.

Getbitgrin.com is an initiative led by Bitgrin Base. It aims to further the education of Bitgrin and mimblewimble to the wider public and provide an easy-to-use website where newcomers can learn all things Bitgrin-related. The site is currently in v1.0 but will be having some upgrades and awareness campaigns going into Q4.

Odin becomes a moderator.

Odin is another community member who has become a moderator of the Discord and Telegram servers. He’s done an amazing job debugging with other community members and helping them get set up. Some comments from the community include “Thank you so much for your help !!! You are the best support !!!” and “@Odin is the best mod in the world, he literally spent more than 1 hour in DM to explain me lots of things about XBG transfer thanks @Odin” Odin is also working on documentation for developers, miners and users to compliment the FAQ that Gundam-Z has created.

Thank you Gundam-Z and Odin for being such great moderators in our community!

Chinese community grows significantly

In addition to our recent listing on CITEX Global, fellow Bitgriner “Ricky” has created a WeChat for the Chinese Bitgrin community. The chat hosts over +300 people and is very active; if anyone reading this is Chinese and would like to join you can message Ricky through Telegram!

It’s been a good Q3, let’s make Q4 even better.

This Q3 we hit most major milestones and we saw strong community growth. It is important to remember that we are laying the foundation as we become private money for everyone.

We’ve seen our community expand to all parts of the globe, astonishing contributions by the community such as BitgrinX and global exchanges support us such as CITEX.

Next quarter(Q4) is packed with innovative developments such as the introduction of non-interactive transactions on Bitgrin and secure IP-based transactions w/ NAT hole-punching. Q4 also brings additional pool & exchange support and detailed documentation for newcomers.

The writeup “A Glimpse into Q4” is coming out this Thursday and will breakdown all the milestones in the roadmap for Q4 plus other initiatives that are not included in it. This piece will also include the details of the XBG giveaway!

Looking forward to seeing more contributions from the community as the Bitgrin ecosystem grows and thanks to everyone who contributed to the project this quarter!

“...slow and steady wins the race, till truth and talent claim their place.”

Weekly Update #10: September 28, 2019

CITEX exchange listing, new community-built block explorer and asian community growth.

Hey everyone! It’s been a while since our last listing, I’m excited to share our new exchange listing and the first community-built block explorer for Bitgrin. Many big things ahead for Bitgrin as we take the right steps towards becoming private money for everyone.

Highlights from this past week:

  • CITEX Global exchange lists Bitgrin BTC & USDT pairs

  • BitgrinX Block Explorer goes live

  • Chinese WeChat group exceeds +300 members

News

  • CITEX Global has listed Bitgrin in their exchange as part of the P Board. The P Board is a launchpad for early stage crypto projects with significant growth prospects. We have been listed among other innovative projects and are humbled for such an opportunity. CITEX Global is a “world-leading digital asset trading platform and top POW mining coin trading platform.” They provide “in-exchange” staking and masternode hosting making it easy for investors to stake their coins.

  • CITEX Global mainly caters to the asian community; this collaboration between Bitgrin and CITEX will provide a new avenue for liquidity to our Asian community members and a consolidation between both communities. We will be hosting an airdrop and potentially a Q&A in collaboration with the CITEX community in the near future so stay tuned!

  • Here is a view of the trading dashboard for CITEX; XBG/BTC pair shown. CITEX has made available the first XBG/USDT trading pair available since the inception of this project. This USDT pair will allow traders to trade XBG without having to worry about the constant fluctuations in BTC. You can trade the XBG/USDT pair on CITEX here. One thing to note, withdrawals are currently disabled. As soon as they are opened, the community will be informed.

  • Vinex.network lists XBG/USDT trading pair. We appreciate this gesture from the VINEX team! You can trade the pair here.

Community

  • Community member, cmxw0, has created a new block explorer for the Bitgrin project. BitgrinX is elegant, simple and includes all the basic components neccesary for a block explorer; it is “slick” as fellow community member, GhostinX, stated. The community is very happy with how this turned out. On behalf of the community we would like to thank you, cmxw0, for doing this awesome block explorer! cmxw0 has mentioned that more features are coming and he/she is open to suggestions; if you have any suggestions or would just like to thank him for the explorer you can DM him through Discord! If you would like to check out the block explorer you can do so here.

Weekly Update #9: September 19, 2019

BitgrinPay is complete, exchange listing is on the way, and updates on documentation.

This week’s newsletter is aimed at educating the community the implications of BitgrinPay and how it works and several other announcements as Q3 comes to a close. Onwards!

Highlights from this past week(CHANGE):

  • BitgrinPay is complete

  • Exchange listing around the corner

  • Updates on Bitgrin documentation

News

  • There is a new exchange listing looming around the corner. Details will be announced once Bitgrin gets the new exchange listing. This exchange listing will finally get XBG on listed CMC; it will also provide new avenues for liquidity for the community. The listing should occur within the next several weeks.

  • The long-awaited BitgrinPay is finally complete as announced several days ago in the Bitgrin Discord server and the @bitgrin twitter page. This feature has been in development for several months now and it seems appropriate to discuss how it works and why it was created in the first place. So, here we go!

    Problem

Currently, it is cumbersome for users to withdraw from exchanges and pools as all payments are done through HTTPS. This method of transfer requires users to “expose their ports/open their ports” through their router, a daunting task for those who are not very technically savvy. This is not a problem independant to Bitgrin, it applies to other mimblewimble implementation such as Grin.

    What it does

Provide a simple way for payment transfer in XBG between participants, mainly solving this need to open-port. This will make transfers much easier for users who want to transfer XBG into their wallets from exchanges and pools.

    How it works

    Implications and use cases

    1. Ease of use - BitgrinPay will make deposit and withdrawals from exchanges and pools easier and prevent the need from opening port.

    2. Streamlined protocol for transfers - Users will be able to simply click a button to transfer their XBG making it a much more automatic and faster process.

    3. Spill-over benefits - Grin and other mimblewimble projects will be able to adopt this development providing an improvement to the overall mimblewimble ecosystem.

    Roll-out plan

You now may be wondering, when is BitgrinPay getting released? Well, soon. The release date is tied to the next Bitgrin exchange listing and will be integrated into this new exchange.

Community

  • Community member, Odin, has been working on a fully revamped FAQ that will be hosted under the bitgrin.dev domain. As you can notice in the snapshot below, the FAQ is thorough and covers everything from a new roadmap, the web wallet, miner guides and much more. This piece of documentation will make onboarding easier for users, miners, exchanges, developers and the like.

Mining

  • Mining continues to hold at a steady rate above 10k GPS.

Props to BitgrinFan as always for creating these Bitgrin Hashrate charts!

Market Data

  • Overall volume continues to range and has begun uptrending.

Wrap Up

With BitgrinPay, a new exchange listing, a newly revamped FAQ and Q3 coming to a close, there are many things to look forward these next several weeks. All these new developments push the Bitgrin ecosystem forward paving the way for mass adoption.

Onwards and have a great weekend!
